Madeira was elected “Best Island Destination in the World” for the eighth consecutive year at the World Travel Awards, advances the Madeira Tourism Promotion Association (APM).

Considered the ‘Oscars’ of tourism, the World Travel Awards are recognized worldwide as the most prestigious honor program in the travel and tourism industry. The awards are given by professionals in the sector, the media and the general public, distinguishing the work developed by the tourist industry, in order to stimulate the competitiveness and quality of tourism.

“The importance of this distinction, which honors the destination, the work of all professionals in the tourism sector and which reinforces Madeira’s leadership in global tourism, is also an incentive for a continuous work to promote and diversify the tourist offer of excellence” , as stated in a statement by Eduardo Jesus, president of the Madeira Promotion Association and Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture.

According to the most recent data, tourism in the Region reached record levels again last August, reaching more than 1 million and 100 thousand overnight stays, a total that represents an increase of 28.5% year-on-year. Tourism thus reinforces its weight in economic activity in the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo.
